For the first two years, we stared at this beautiful dirt. We noted the contours, the soil biology, the afternoon wind off the Blues, the climate and the sun pattern. We considered every aspect of the vineyard and how best to steward the vines to produce their best. First leaf, second leaf then finally third… we pick. It has been five years of love and labor squeezed into two barrels (37 cases) worth of Estate Viognier named “The Sparrow.” This one is for the à List only. The wine has a firm classic nose of peach, nutmeg and orange blossom. The mouth is firm yet full and round with peach pit and bright plump nectarine. The finish is a freshly cut apricot and lingers.

It was a lazy summer afternoon under the shade of an oak tree where we sat as three generations of old and new family. While enjoying great stories, we drank some àMaurice Rosé. "It has a wonderful taste," shouted David. "Tastes like a strawberry rhubarb pie," Pete declared. "Who needs more?" my Dad said before he realized he was holding an empty bottle.

In the belly of the decanter the 2007 Viognier color is a pale yellow with light hints of warm hues. As the wine is poured into the glass, aromas of lemon meringue, nectarine, peach and honeysuckle rise. With further investigation the traditional àMaurice baby powder is found hidden behind the delicate fruit notes. It coats and lifts every inch of the palate. More nectarines and a little honeydew melon are tasted. The light crisp acidity is followed by a nutty peach pit finish. This wine hangs on like a long summer night.

This wine is a gorgeous blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. The wine's garnet color bleeds into a deep velvety purple around the edge. The delicate smell of rose petals is nicely framed by plum, cigar box, and cassis. The wine's smooth richness is rounded out in the mouth with elegant supple tannins. The plum and cherry notes really follow through making this wine subtle and meaty at the same time. The Callahan's back is strengthened with lingering chocolate-raspberry, truffle, and spicy tobacco undertones. This is a wine that benefits from decanting. Given time, this wine will become more generous and morph into a rich and complex mixture of dark exotic and dried fruit with a long, austere, silky finish.
